This season ended as dramatically as it began with a battle against the Fullerton Titans, but this time the 49ers emerged victorious. Long Beach ends the season at 15-13-2. Back in October, the Titans won 6-5 in the 8th
round of a shootout. Last Saturday, James Robelotto’s power play goal with
49er seconds remaining gave the Beach a 6-5 overtime win. Brad Roberts led
all scorers with a nifty hat trick, getting two goals 10 seconds apart in
the first period. Roberts seemed like he was on his way to the golden sombrero on Saturday but Titan netminder Brandon Heethius robbed Roberts on multiple tries. However Roberts would not be denied in the third period. With the 49ers on the penalty kill, Roberts got a step past the Titan defense for a breakaway. As one Titan hooked and hauled Roberts to the ice, Roberts was able to direct the puck through Heethius’ legs for the highlight-reel goal. We bid farewell to our graduating seniors: Captain Joe Nalley, Kevin Chen, Scott Shapiro, Treasurer Tony Alarcon and our Team Manager Lindsey Linker. Thanks for all your hard work on and off the ice. The 49ers welcome the new officers for next season: President Phillip Goodman, Vice President James Robelotto, Treasurer Brad Roberts, and Secretary Colin Hurt. The 49ers would like to thank the following people for helping to make this season so great: Veronica Hernandez, Gameday staff Lindsey Linker, Team Manager – great job Lindsey! Gordan Zdjelar – Web Master Katie Sheehy – Scorekeeper Rita Hayes – the best club advisor any school could have …And especially you the fan for all your support through the ups and downs. Thanks and we’ll see you in the fall of 2010! |

Sean Hoang's third period hat trick helped the 49ers pull away from the Loyola Marymount Lions for an 11-5 victory on Friday night in Lakewood. Lion netminder Tyler Paine had no answer to Hoang's slapshot nor could he stop shots from the right point. Nick Kemp, Tanner Woodbury, and George Laboda each scored goals from a step inside the blue line. At the other end of the ice Ricky St. Louis only allowed one goal in the final 28 minutes of play. The loudest cheers of the night were for Scott Byrum, Scott Shapiro and Tony Alarcon. Each were involved in their own altercations and came out on top in each one. Shapiro and Byrum did receive disqualifications for this Saturday's game at LMU in Culver City but will be eligible to play next Saturday for the season finale in Ontario against Fullerton. Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Chris Northy Memorial Spirit Award co-winners Team Manager Lindsey Linker and Team Trainer Katie Sniffen. |

Six different 49ers found the back of the net on Saturday night as Long Beach held on for an 8-5 win against the Cal. State Univ. Fullerton Titans. Fullerton tied the game with a questionable goal to end the second period. Time had appeared to have expired but the goal was allowed. Long Beach would not be denied though as Sean Hoang's rebound goal 5:12 into the period stood as the game winning goal. Robbie Zdjelar, Tanner Woodbury, and James Robelotto also scored for the Beach. Brad Roberts and Hoang each had two goals. |

Due to unfortunate scheduling errors and conflicts, there will be NO games the weekend of 1/28 - 1/30. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. The 49ers return to action at home on Thursday Feb. 4 at 9pm against our NorCal rivals the San Jose State Spartans. Back in October, the 49ers defeated the Spartans 3-2 in Lakewood. Also, the game that was scheduled at Loyola Marymount on Thursday Feb. 11 has been moved to SATURDAY FEB. 13 @ 5pm. The location has also been changed to Culver Ice Arena. We are proud to report about three former 49ers that are overseas playing/coaching professionally. Former Head Coach John Cacciatore is in his second season with the Varese Killer Bees in Northern Italy. Last year his team went undefeated on their way to a championship and this year was shaping up the same way. The Bees have an impressive 136 goals for and only 27 goals against in 16 games for a record of 15-0-1. Brian Horwitz, a 49er standout that was a contender for the ACHA league lead in points a few seasons ago, is the Bee's leading scorer with 34 goals and 9 assists. Cacciatore also brought goaltender Frank Mitrano to Italy and Frank was playing marvelously until an opponent hit Frank from behind breaking Mitrano's collar bone. The cheap shot has left the Bee's championship chances in peril with Mitrano out of commission for a couple of months. We wish Frank a speedy recovery and best wishes to the Bees! Meanwhile, some local 49er alumni have created their own adult league team based out of the East/West Ice Palace in Artesia. You can follow the "Thirsty Niners" on their Facebook group page under the same name. Our annual alumni game is slated for Saturday, April 3 at the Staples Center. The 49ers of Now face the 49ers of Yesteryear at 3pm, then the Kings and Ducks fight at 7:30pm. Tickets are in short supply @ $35/each (300lvl), so email us at 49ericehockey@gmail.com. |

Scott Byrum, Joe Nalley, and Robbie Zdjelar scored four goals in a three-minute span late in the third period to defeat Cal. State Northridge, who was ranked no. 2 in Division 3 of the ACHA going into tonight's game. Ricky St. Louis outdueled Ron Dierkes in net for the win. Back in November, the Matadors stung the 49ers 7-1 in Lakewood. Since that loss, the 49ers have won 10 of 12. Matt Kresky has to keep on wearing his Portland hospital gown. Brad Roberts is not allowed to shave his beard. The streak continues... |

Sean Hoang may have set a 49er one-game record tonight scoring six goals to lead the Beach to a 13-3 shelling of the depleted UCLA Bruins. Brad Roberts also had a breakout game scoring one nifty shorthanded goal and dishing out five assists. Alex Miklovic continues to play solidly in the net for the 49ers. Paul Leigh also had two goals while Chris Chan, Scott Byrum, Tanner Woodbury, and James Robelotto also found the back of the net once. A few key stats during the 49ers six-game streak: - 49ers have outscored opponents 46-14 - Beach power play is an impressive 25% (9 for 36); NHL best right now is Montreal at 24.7% - Beach penalty kill is a dominant 92.5% (37 of 40); NHL best right now is Boston at 88.1% Up next for the Beach: Friday 1/22 @ Cal State Northridge, Location TBD |

How sweep it is. The 49ers completed a three-game road sweep through Portland State and the Univ. of Washington with a dominating 7-2 win over the Huskies on Saturday night. Sean Hoang, Scott Byrum, and Joe Nalley each had two goals and Tanner Woodbury added one more. Alex Miklovic fought off the Husky attack for his second win of the trip. The hero of the weekend was Matt Kresky, who underwent an emergency appendectomy on Thursday while the 49ers were playing against Portland State. What started as a stomach ache progressed into severe pains which led to a hospital visit and subsequent surgery. Kresky recovered quickly and was still able to catch up to the team in Seattle. The team autographed his hospital gown painted with his #15, which he must continue to wear now that 49ers have won three in a row. Long Beach has also won 7 of their last 8 going back to November 2009. Action resumes next weekend in Long Beach on Friday 1/15 @ 7:20pm and Saturday 1/16 at 3pm, both against UCLA. **** We apologize for the technical difficulties on Friday's broadcast. We'll try to get it fixed before Saturday's game at 6:30pm. In the meantime, we'll post scores here as they happen. Huskies take ill-advised crosscheck and interference penalties with 23 seconds left. Hoang makes them pay with a power play goal. 4-1 WIN FOR THE BEACH!! Washington net is empty with 1:21 to go...Timeout, WA. BYRUM SCORES CRASHING THE NET!!! 3:47 TO GO!!! 3-1 LEAD FOR THE 49ERS! Hanging on with 4:10 to go... 12:29 Beach with good pressure. Almost found the net again. 6:43 to go... 49ers Kill the major!!! Husky Ian Shook took an extra whack at Ricky St. Louis covering the puck. Scrum ensued, Nate Gerrels has just been ejected. Brad Roberts is in the box for getting tangled with another Husky. Huskies get a 5 min major out of the deal. Side editorial: these refs have no idea how to control a game. 12:15pm 49ers kill a penalty. 14:13 remaining 3rd period 12:05 49ers can't score on the 2-man advantage. Still 2-1 with 18min to go in 3rd 11:46pm End of 2nd period. Back in 15min 11:42pm Huskies score with 2min to go in 2nd per. Beach still leads 2-1. 11:16pm: Byrum scores on the doorstep. Assist from Hoang @ 2:07 2nd per. 49ers lead 2-0. Phillip |

Thursday, January 6, 2010 Scott Byrum scored the only goal of the shootout to defeat the Portland State Vikings 4-3 on Thursday night in Portland. Alex Miklovic played a great game in net for the 49ers, even getting a little help from the crossbar twice during the shootout. Long Beach trailed 2-0 after two periods against a Viking squad with only eight skaters. Five minutes into the third period, Robbie Zdjelar tapped in a rebound from Tanner Woodbury's point shot to break the seal on Viking tender Ryan Stanchfield and bring the 49ers closer at 2-1. The Vikings played a good game of "Keep Away" for the next 10 minutes until Joe Nalley singlehandedly stole the puck from a Viking defender in the slot and fired a low shot past Stanchfield for the 2-2 tie. With 47 seconds to go in the game, Kevin Young and Brad Roberts set screens in front allowing Scott Byrum to sneak a shot past Stanchfield for the 3-2 go ahead goal. However Portland pulled the goalie and was able to tie the score with 17 seconds left. Overtime flew by with no goals so the game went to the shootout. The 49ers sent Sean Hoang and Joe Nalley out for rounds one and two, but they were unable to beat Stanchfield. Bryum made a nice deke in the slot and beat Stanchfield clean in round three. Tucker Dougherty had a chance to extend the shootout but Miklovic made the save to secure the Beach victory. The 49ers have now won 5 of the last 6 going back to December '09. Tomorrow the team travels to Seattle for the Univ. of Wash at 10pm and then Saturday at 6:30pm. Listen live right here!

Finally. San Diego State has been solved.

Last night’s 12-1 thumping of the Fullerton Titans
was the breakout game this 49er squad has needed and known they have
been capable of all season long. The win marks the third in a row for
the Beach and the streak has signs of legitimate growth from this young
squad. Special teams have been incredibly effective: power
play is 10 for the last 22 including an impressive 7 for 9 last night
while the penalty kill has allowed only one goal in the last 21 chances.
Beach was a perfect 9 for 9 against the Titans on Saturday. Goaltending
has been solid: the tending tandem of Ricky St. Louis and Alex Miklovic
has a goals-against average of 1.33 over the last four games.
Forechecking and backchecking have been fierce and aggressive wearing
down the defenders and attackers. Next weekend the 49ers will have their hands full
with a pair against More details from Saturday’s win: Matt Kresky: 3G, 1A (two shorthanded) James Robelotto: 3G, 1A Sean Hoang: 2 PPG, 3A Joe Nalley: 2G, 2A Robbie “The Croatian Bulldog” Zdjelar: 2G Scott Byrum, Scott Kenyon & Brad Roberts: 2A each Kevin Brown, Tanner Woodbury, Chris Chan & Paul Leigh: 1A each Go Beach!!! |

Friday night’s game against the It began with a quick pace, heavy hitting, and
scoring chances for both teams. USC struck early after 49er turnover.
Brad Roberts roofed a rebound off Nick Kemp’s drive for the 1-1 tie
after one period. George Laboda drew a five-minute major power play in
the second, but Whistles were a plenty, yet USC managed to find all
the ref’s blind spots so they could hook and slash players like Clay
Perry behind the play. Sean Hoang was denied on two breakaways, once by
Trojan goalie Zachary Keith and once by crossbar. In the third period, Nick Kemp covered the puck with
his hand in the crease giving USC their choice of penalty shot shooter.
Beach netminder Rick St. Louis stopped their leading scorer Adam
Zacuto’s penalty shot. Trojan goalie Zachary Keith was removed from the game
in the third for having illegal leg pads which also carried a two-minute
minor. USC’s Coach Mark Wilbur challenge against Hoang connected with Nalley for a goal with the
two-man advantage to tie the score at 2-2, but the 49ers prematurely
ended their power play--an atrocious habit the 49ers have developed this
season. SC scored on their own 2-man moments and the 3-2 lead. Philip
Adams earned the win and played less than one period of hockey while
LB and SC battle again Saturday at 7:30pm @ Glacial Gardens. It will be
our first ever Greek Night: wear your letters and get in for just $1.

In San Jose
last night, the Long Beach State 49ers played their strongest game of
the season but fell just short to the Denver Pioneers by a score of 5-4.
The Pioneers
scored 10 seconds into the game and the 49ers were down 2-0 after one
period. Beach Head Coach Joe Sheehy challenged his squad in the second
period to shut down the Pioneers and tie the score, and the 49ers
responded by doing just that.
Each team
traded goals in the third period until late in the contest the score was
tied again 4-4. The 49er go ahead goal was called back when the ref
determined that Chris Chan had kicked in the puck, although when asked
by his teammates and coach, Chan said he never even saw the puck. Denver
recovered and scored their fifth goal moments later and held on for the
win.
Sean Hoang
had a pair of goals, and James Robelotto and Matt Kresky each scored for
the 49ers.
Even though
Denver outshot Long Beach 52-40, the 49ers’ sense team character and
unity continues to develop.
“It was our
best game of the season,” said Coach Sheehy. “Even though we lost, we
played one of the premiere teams
country. They had to fight to earn that win.”

Last Saturday, the 49ers fell 8-5 to a fast San Diego State Aztec team. Long Beach jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but gave up three power play goals in the second period and was down 5-3 going into the second intermission. The 49ers came out with guns blazing in the third period and cut the lead in half seven minutes in and looked like they were about to continue momentum with a power play right after their 4th goal. But the Aztec special teams were too much for the 49ers, scoring two shorthanded goals and a power play goal on a two-man advantage. Despite the loss, Head Coach Joe Sheehy was optimistic about this season’s 49er squad, now 1-2 on through three games. “I saw something in our team in that third period,” said Sheehy. “This team is starting to find its character.”
In two weeks, the 49ers return home for a three-game series: Thursday 10/22 9:10pm vs. San Jose State Friday 10/23 9pm vs. Northern Arizona Univ. Saturday 10/24 7:30pm vs. Northern Arizona Univ.

If tonight’s
game is any indication of the season ahead, then fasten your seatbelts and
pull down your shoulder harness because it’s going to be thrill ride. Despite
outshooting the Titans 35-15 through two periods, the 49ers trailed 3-1
entering the third period. Five minutes into the third, Matt Kreske and Joe
Nalley each scored shorthanded on the same penalty kill, tying the score at
3-3. A few minutes
later, Kevin Young and Chris Chan flashed some speed to start a 2-on-1 break
with Young scoring a go-ahead, power-play goal. Fullerton would tie the
score just minute later though. Chris Chan
then made another sensational effort on the forecheck to steal the puck from
a Titan defender, skate around the net, and beat Titan netminder Alex Miller
for the 5-4 lead. But Fullerton
would again find the back of the net with their second power play goal of
the game to tie it up and send the game to overtime. Both teams
managed to sustain pressure in the other’s zones but failed to convert and
the game proceeded to a shootout. CSUF’s goalie
Alex Miller and the 49ers’ Ricky St. Louis both had played extremely well
for their teams, but Miller was tested more often than St. Louis. In the
shootout, Joe Nalley, Sean Hoang, Kevin Young and Matt Kresky scored in the
shootout, but so did four other Titans. In the 8th round, Nate
Gerrell’s shot went wide while Kyle Oyama was able beat St. Louis for the
game winner. |
